Over the last few weeks, the topic of fat loss just keeps coming up in conversations with both members and prospective members alike.
I’ve been hearing things like, “I’m doing all the right things”, or, “I’m following all of the rules”, … and then something along the lines of, “but it’s just not working.”
And it’s been through these conversations that I realized we could be doing a way better job of simplifying fat loss and put some common misconceptions to bed once and for all.
So, over the next 6 weeks—7 if you include today’s lesson—I’m going to explain why the “right things” and the “the rules” are actually misguided advice that actually sabotage fat loss.
… and what actually works instead.
Does this approach look at all familiar?
Sarah was sick and tired of feeling, well, sick and tired. She hated the way her clothes weren’t fitting well anymore, how her confidence was slowly depleted over the last few years, and she decided it was time to finally do something about it.
Sarah started by hitting the pavement every morning with a run. She didn’t particularly like running, but she was willing to make the sacrifice because she knew she needed to burn calories to drop the unwanted body fat that she accumulated around her thighs and belly.
And it worked! The scale started creeping down a little bit over the next few weeks.
… until it stopped.
Right about that time Sarah ran into a friend at Starbucks. Turns out, her friend, Jen, had joined Orange Theory Fitness a couple of months ago and had been feeling GREAT!
Jen explained that her weight had been dropping, her energy was up, and she actually enjoyed the workouts.
So, Sarah decided that it was time to up the ante and join OTF with Jen.
Lo and behold, Jen was right!
Over the next few months Sarah’s weight loss resumed and she was feeling all of the benefits that Jen said she had been when they met at Starbucks.
… until
Sarah plateaued again.
Weeks and weeks went by with no change on the scale and her clothes weren’t fitting any better.
OTF, more like WTF?!
But never one to be deterred, Sarah decided it was time to add the running back in on her off days,
… and as much as she didn’t want to, started following Whole30.
Once again, progress resumed,
for a little at least.
But then Whole30 ended, and after feeling deprived of some of her favorite foods and wine, Sarah jumped back in to her old ways.
Needless to say, the progress stalled, and then she slid backwards to where she started from.
… until she got frustrated enough to start all over again.
This story could go on forever, am I right?
I’m willing to bet that you’re seeing a little bit of yourself in Sarah.
Why?
Because to some extent—maybe not the exact approach, but the frustration of the ups and downs—everybody I meet with during their initial consultation has dealt with feeling confused about what to actually do to drop body fat.
But, as it almost ALWAYS turns out, the approach they’ve been using before making their way to BSP NOVA is completely upside-down.
